The Almighty Divine Creator granted the spirits with creative powers. The proper terminology that could be used is “Divine-Craftsmen”.

The creation of life is a subject that humans have been in the dark ever since the creation of the wise man (Homo-sapiens), except for the few highly enlightened people who lived at a high level of consciousness.

I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but when I first looked at Changing Planes, I was totally intrigued. The midnight blue of the sky and the water are mirror images of each other and it makes you think of when you have two mirrors and reflect them back to each other so that you can see infinity in them. This book was like that. It gave me a glimpse of infinity, something I never believed possible.

When I opened up my order from Amazon, in a way, I was relieved it was not a big book. Though I love reading, I just don’t have the time to read a longer novel, and my attention often wonders. No so with this little book, when I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down until I was done.

Though it’s my job to deal in words, I can’t describe this book well enough to do it justice. It’s better if you just read it yourself. I highly recommend that you do so. It’s not expensive and it’s the kind of book that you want to keep around, just to be able to give it to a friend. When I read it, it was like I was reading my own life, I identified with the main character that much.

This book should be read by millions. Don’t be left out — this is going to be a big hit, I can tell, I have a sense about these things — and it would translate very well into a movie, especially with all the special effects that they can do nowadays. If you can get through it without crying, then your heart has turned into a rock, this book may well be what the doctor ordered to turn it to flesh once again.

The Fall by Simon Mawer: Simon Mawer has given us a good novel, just not a great one. It can be electrifying and dizzying at one point and then detached and mired in its characters’ own lack of inertia the next. A more even novel would have been received better, but The Fall is still an enjoyable read that will leave you guessing the truth until the very end.

December 6 by Martin Cruz Smith: December 6 is a novel that succeeds on many levels. It’s an education into the mindset and culture of pre-war Japan. It’s an indictment of those beating the drums of war behind their own self-righteousness. Best of all, it’s a great story, and the description of Harry’s predicament is peeled back layer by layer, and by the end we’ve come to understand and sympathize with him completely. There’s a bit of Harry in all of us, trying to do the right thing while taking advantage of the situation at the same time.

The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch: The Highest Tide is a short book, less than 250 pages, and can be read in one afternoon. Jim Lynch’s debut novel spends a wonderful summer with Miles O’Malley and the interesting and peculiar life that abounds in Puget Sound. Take an afternoon and enjoy it for yourself.

Divisadero by Michael Ondaatje: This is Michael Ondaatje’s gift to the rest of us, his net for holding everything dear to us, even if it eventually leads to heartache and the divisions in our lives. There is nothing predictable in Divisadero and each thread leads to another story that mirrors each other, turning back on itself, so that even its divisions are blurred. This is the poetry of this novel, and the poetry of our lives, that has been expertly captured here.

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris: It’s sentences like that grab your attention with his off-kilter way of telling about his life that makes you want to find out what it’s all about. Fortunately, David Sedaris continues to deliver on the promise with more interesting, funny, and thought-provoking parts of his life. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is a welcome addition to his private literary genre and a gift to the world that can always use more laughter. My time spent with David Sedaris passed too quickly, but this is a book that can be read again when a dose of laughter is needed. If you haven’t read any of his work before, this is a fine place to start. If you’re a fan of David Sedaris, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is one you must read.

The Ghost by Robert Harris: Following Robert Harris’ own explanation, The Ghost feels true. His characters act like we believe politicians would, and his intrigue and secrets, while surprising within the story, are unsurprising in the world of political theater where the ends often justify the means. While Adam Lang is not Tony Blair, Harris’ outrage at recent history hits the nail on the head. The Ghost rises above political thriller to an eye-opening examination of the recent past and current issues. Whatever literary or political points he meant to score with The Ghost, Robert Harris has done so in both a thought-provoking and entertaining way.

Islands of Silence by Martin Booth: The chapters in this novel alternate between the present-day Alec and his story as a young man, striking out on his own as an archaeologist in 1914. The elder Alec tells of the discipline necessary to maintain his silence, the kindly doctor who wants to draw Alec out of his shell, his dreams that content or frighten him, and the horrors and evil he has seen in the past. He is a man most certainly sane, lucid in his thoughts, and convinced of the nature of evil that exists outside of his controlled environment.

The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard: All this makes The Great Fire an easy book to put down, and difficult to read at times. Ultimately, there’s little invested in the characters besides some gentle interest as to how each of their stories would play out. The plot, whether it be the love story or the different reactions by each character to the postwar world, is slight and never consuming. Others may be able to look past these shortcomings and indulge themselves in the fine literary qualities presented in this novel, and enjoy it much more than I did. For me, it was like going to a movie or a play where the scenery was perfectly captured, the costumes entertaining and optimally chosen for each character, and the acting brilliant, except they forgot to wrap it around an engaging story. Perhaps sitting back and enjoying the presentation can be an enjoyable experience, if you can live without the story. The Great Fire, despite its praise and award, was a disappointing book because of its inability to foster much interest in the lives of the people within it.

Against Love by Laura Kipnis: Despite its tedious reading at times and over-the-top generalizations, Ms. Kipnis has achieved her goal which she states at the beginning: “it’s just supposed to shake things up and rattle a few convictions.” Reading this book will force you to think about the relationships in your life. You may not agree with her arguments or assertions, but you can’t deny that she’s engendered new thoughts about beliefs you probably hold dear. As a polemic, Against Love succeeds in providing a conviction-rattling read.

The Clearing by Tim Gautreaux: The Clearing is a tour de force for a new voice in American literature. Tim Gautreaux has written a novel that not only deals with the big ideas, but also with the little, yet important, things that make up human life. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell: Should you read Cloud Atlas? If you appreciate literary fiction, then this is a novel you should read at least once. Maybe more. It will challenge you, intimidate you, frustrate you, and dare you to think about the important questions it raises. It may not, however, grab you and pull you along with its storylines. That doesn’t necessarily detract from its importance or its brilliance. David Mitchell may be more intelligent than the rest of us, and he has some interesting and important ideas he wants to explore with his readers. Read Cloud Atlas.

Blood of Victory by Alan Furst: Blood of Victory is not a powerful book that grabs your emotions or one that is filled with war action to keep pages turning quickly. The book is a quick read, though, since it weaves sympathetic characters through realistic depictions of life in Europe during 1940, and their humanity never plays second fiddle to the war story. Ilya Serebin could be a man turned cynical and self-centered by his unlucky lot in life, but in the midst of war, he continues to search for beauty and truth. In the guise of a spy story, Alan Furst has given us a story about a man with the courage to retain his humanity, his love, and his hopes in the face of evil. Without realizing how expertly he has drawn us into Serebin’s world, we are enriched by the short time we’ve stayed with him.

Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs: While the story line in Bones to Ashes can be a bit disturbing, it moved along quickly with enough mystery and plot twists to keep the mind engaged. This is a good book to pick up on a rainy weekend or take to the beach to lose oneself for a while.

Bangkok Haunts by John Burdett: Bangkok Haunts is another fascinating and entertaining excursion through Sonchai’s world. The investigation of Damrong’s murder allows him to educate us farang about his exotic world and different way of thinking. At the same time, it challenges Sonchai with forces that may be outside his control, in this world and the next. The novel never loses its pace or suspense, and it lets its humor and wit lift us above the dark story it tells. Bangkok Haunts finds John Burdett at the top of his game.

The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl: The Dante Club is an excellent debut novel for Matthew Pearl. It’s a bit uneven at times, but once it hits its stride, it’s an entertaining and intelligent story that holds your attention until everything comes to a satisfying conclusion. A previous knowledge about Dante or the Boston poets isn’t necessary to enjoy this fine novel. I look forward to what Matthew Pearl might have in store next for us.

A Box of Matches by Nicholson Baker: For those readers who can enjoy a novel without much plot but filled with these “aha” moments, then A Box of Matches will satisfy them. Personally, I need more structure and character development in the novels I enjoy, so a lot of this book was like being stuck next to Emmett at a party. I kept needing my drink refilled.
